There is no formal statutory grace period under the DPDP Act after November 2025 — obligations under the Act are already in force. What is commonly referred to as the grace period is the implementation window between the DPDP Rules 2025 notification and the expected full enforcement date around May 2027, roughly 18 months. This calculator estimates how much of that window you have left, based on your current readiness stage, and gives a tailored action plan.

Not in the sense of a period during which the law does not apply. The DPDP Act 2023's obligations are already in force, and the DPDP Rules 2025, notified in November 2025, made the detailed compliance requirements explicit. What is informally called a grace period is the implementation runway before the Data Protection Board is expected to be fully operational for enforcement — commonly estimated at around 18 months, placing full enforcement around May 2027.
This distinction matters for risk planning: a data breach, complaint, or violation occurring during this window is not automatically shielded from consequence just because Board enforcement capacity is still scaling up. Treating the window as free time is the single most common — and costly — mistake mid-market Indian companies make.
A practical allocation for most mid-market companies: the first phase (4–6 weeks) should be a DPDP Readiness Assessment and fixes to the highest-severity gaps — consent mechanism, privacy notice, Grievance Officer, and security safeguards. The second phase (2–3 months) should cover full documentation, vendor DPA reviews, and staff training. The final phase should be reserved for audit-style review and board sign-off, ideally completed with a comfortable buffer before May 2027 rather than right up against it.
Niti Bharat's fixed-price DPDP Compliance Roadmap service (₹75K–₹3.2L depending on scope) is built to sequence exactly this kind of phased plan against your specific readiness stage, size and data complexity — turning a generic deadline into a concrete internal project plan.
